Overview

Hiking on ancient paths and in the myth, so we could say about this beautiful trail in the heart of Psiloritis (Mount Ida).

The path begins from the Nida plateau (1.450m), where here according to the myth, goddess Dimitra (the Olympian goddess of the harvest and agriculture) fell in love with the human Iasion. Ηere also located the cave of Idaion Antron, birthplace of Zeus.

Hiking between stone built Mitata (shepherds’ shelters), samples of typical architecture of mountainous Crete, springs with running water and through a beautiful oak tree forest we end, after of 1:30 hour hiking, at Kamaraiko cave (1,700m), one of the most important cult caves in Crete.

Here were found some of the most beautiful pottery vessels of the Minoan period, decorated in what is known as the Kamares Style after the cave.

The marks of the excavations and ceramics are still visible and scattered in the landscape.
