Overview

Pahnes is the second highest summit (2.453m) of Crete and the first of Lefka Ori. Situated in the south side of the Mountain range and the landscape around the summit is a typical example of the Cretan word ‘Madara’ (bared Mountains with no vegetation).

We start with a small road trip from the traditional and historical village of Anopoli into the interiors of the mountain with an off-road vehicle (transfer included in the price) .  After of 1 hour of rough driving through an adventurous dirt road (Distance 22km, 1 hour driving) we will reach to the starting point of the hike, at the heart of the Lefka Ori mountains. From there, we follow the well marked trail up to the highest peak of the mountain range, Pachnes (2.453m). The view from the summit is breath-taking! From the South side we have unlimited view across the Libyan Sea and the southest island of Europe, Gavdos. From the others points of the horizon our eyes are flooded by what the locals call a mountainous desert. A landscape full of high summits, small plateaus and bared mountain slopes.

The duration of the hike is approximately 4 hours – without the breaks – and it’s level is medium to hard. Good physical shape is required. The approaching to the starting point of the path from the last village of Anopoli, is a demanding driving with an off road vehicle. The path to the summit is easy with no big ascent and it has been part of the E4 European long distance path. Also, the approaching to the starting point of the path, from the last village, is demanding with off road vehicle.
