Overview
Before you read the difficulty levels as we present them in Alternative Crete, keep in mind that Crete has a wild mountainous landscape with high rocky mountains, deep remote gorges and dry alpine landscapes at higher altitudes.
Thus, the difficulty is subjective and is perceived differently from person to person depending on their experience, their physical condition and their connection with the mountainous landscape and the outdoor activities.
- Easy: Perfect for families and beginners, flat trails with minimal elevation gain. Duration 1:30 up to 3 hours on smooth paths with slight inclines.
- Moderate: Requires basic fitness. Gentle inclines and moderate effort required and with duration from 2 up to 4 hours. Paths with gentle uphills and some stones.
- Challenging: For experienced hikers with steeper climbs, longer distances and demand endurance. 4 up to 6 hours duration on paths with steep slopes, rocky terrain and some exposed spots. Good stamina and balance are required.
- Difficult: Demands advanced skills. Rugged trails, high elevation and technical sections with steep and rocky paths, with exposed spots. Duration 5 up to 8 hours.
- Extreme: Experts only. Remote routes, extreme elevation and preparation needed. Rocky and steep trails in difficult conditions, with many exposed spots and with estimated duration from 8+ Technical knowledge is required, possibly including the use of equipment.
