Explore the hiking trails of Chania
When most people think of Chania, they envision the kaleidoscopic colours of the Venetian harbour or the pink sands of Elafonisi beach. But for us, at Alternative Crete, the true magic of the “Cretan West” lies just a few miles inland, etched into the limestone of the Lefka Ori.
In collaboration with the visionary Chania Trails project, we are helping travellers rediscover a side of the island that remained hidden for decades. This isn’t just about walking; it’s about navigating a living map of Cretan heritage.

What is the Chania Trails Project?
The Chania Trails initiative is a comprehensive regional effort to revive the historical footpaths of the Prefecture of Chania. Spanning across the municipalities of Apokoronas, Platanias, Kissamos, Kantanos-Selino, and Sfakia, this network has been meticulously cleared, mapped, and signposted according to international standards.
The project focuses on the kalderimia—the ancient stone-paved mule tracks—that once served as the only connection between isolated mountain villages. By following the red and white markers, hikers are now able to traverse the landscape with a level of safety and clarity never before possible in Crete.

Top Routes to Explore with Alternative Crete
Our tours are designed to complement the official Chania Trails network, adding the layer of local storytelling and logistical support that makes a hike truly memorable.
The Gorge of Agia Irini
Part of the official network in the Selino region, the Agia Irini gorge is a masterpiece of biodiversity. As you descend, you are surrounded by ancient plane trees and vertical cliffs.
The Chania Trails Connection: The path is exceptionally well-maintained, leading you directly into the heart of the E4 European Path.
Alternative Crete Tip: We time our treks to avoid the midday sun, finishing in the coastal village of Sougia for a dip in the Libyan sea and a taste of authentic Sfakian pie.

The Akrotiri “Religious” Loop
Just minutes from Chania city, this route connects the historical monasteries of the Akrotiri peninsula. The trail from Gouverneto to the ruins of Katholiko is one of the most atmospheric in the Mediterranean.
The Chania Trails Connection: The project has helped to preserve and enhance the wider area, ensuring that this sensitive site remains accessible yet protected.
Highlights: Crossing the massive stone bridge of Katholiko, which spans a deep ravine leading to a hidden turquoise cove.

The Aradena Gorge: Sfakia’s Hidden Giant
A gorge not as prominent as Samaria, Aradena offers a rougher, more technical experience. The trail starts from the abandoned homonymous village, passing under the famous iron bridge with the final destination being Marmara beach.
The Chania Trails Connection: This trail is a prime example of the project’s effort to highlight “alternative” gorges that offer solitude and raw beauty.
Alternative Crete Tip: We arrange boat transfers from Marmara to Loutro, providing a spectacular view of the coastline you just conquered, from the water.

Why Hike with a Local Expert?
While the Chania Trails project provides the infrastructure (the maps and the markers), Alternative Crete provides the soul.
- Technical Logistics: Many of the best trails are linear, not circular. We provide “drop-off and pick-up” services, so you don’t have to worry about trekking back to your car or navigating local bus schedules.
- Botanical & Cultural Insights: Our guides are experts in the endemic flora of the White Mountains. We’ll show you where the wild dittany grows and explain the architecture of the mitata (stone shepherd huts) that dot the landscape.
- Safety First: The Cretan terrain is beautiful but can be deceptive. We monitor weather conditions and trail status in real-time, ensuring you’re always on the safest route.

Preparing for Your Journey
To enjoy the Chania Trails network responsibly, keep these tips in mind:
- Follow the Markers: Stick to the official signposted paths to protect local flora and avoid getting lost in the rocky terrain.
- Gear Up: Sturdy hiking boots are non-negotiable. The limestone “karst” landscape of Crete is famously sharp.
- Respect the Land: Many trails pass through grazing lands. Always close gates behind you and follow the “Leave No Trace” principle.
