Five Easy Hikes in Crete. Discovering the Island’s Hiking Trails
When people think of hiking in Crete, the legendary Samaria Gorge often comes to mind or even the challenging, Lefka Ori mountains. But you don’t need to be a pro hiker to experience the demanding trails of the Cretan landscape. Beyond the high peaks of the White Mountains lie accessible trails filled with rich history, blooming wild herbs, and hidden coastal gems.
At Alternative Crete, we believe the best way to see the island is at a pace that allows you to breathe it all in. Here are five easy hikes that offer maximum reward with moderate effort.
1. Katholiko Gorge, a Spiritual Journey.
Located on the Akrotiri Peninsula near Chania, the Katholiko Gorge is one of the most atmospheric walks in the Mediterranean. Starting from the Gouverneto Monastery, the stone-paved path leads you past the Cave of the Bear to the ruins of the 11th-century Katholiko Monastery—often cited as the oldest in Crete.
- Highlight: Crossing the massive stone bridge that spans the gorge.
- The Reward: The trail ends at “Avlaki,” a small, secluded fjord with crystal-clear turquoise waters perfect for a post-hike dip.

2. Margarites & Ancient Eleftherna. Pottery and Ancient History
If you are staying in the Rethymno region, the Margarites Valley hiking tour is a must. This 10km route is a gentle stroll through olive groves and vineyards, connecting the famous pottery village of Margarites with the archaeological wonders of Ancient Eleftherna.
- Highlight: Visiting local pottery workshops where artisans still use Minoan-era techniques.
- The Reward: Exploring the Hellenistic and Roman ruins of Eleftherna, nestled in a lush, green landscape.

3. Preveli Beach. The Palm Forest and River Trek
For those seeking a tropical escape, the Preveli Beach trail offers a unique landscape found nowhere else in Europe. This easy walk takes you through a lush forest of Theophrastus palm trees along the banks of the Grand River (Megalopotamos).
- Highlight: Walking through the heart of the second-largest palm forest in Crete.
- The Reward: Emerging at the famous Preveli Beach, where the river meets the Libyan Sea, for a swim in the refreshing river-fed waters.

4. Zaros Gorge & Rouvas Forest
Venturing into the Heraklion region, the hike through Zaros Gorge to Rouvas Forest is a refreshing change of scenery. This trail follows a well-marked path through a deep limestone canyon that opens up into one of the largest and oldest Kermes oak forests in the Mediterranean.
- Highlight: The sheer variety of flora and the sound of running water throughout the hike.
- The Reward: Reaching the plateau of Agios Ioannis, an ideal spot for a picnic under the shade of ancient trees before a relaxed descent.

5. Imbros Gorge. The Perfect Family-Friendly Canyon
If you want the “gorge experience” without the physical toll of Samaria, Imbros Gorge is the perfect alternative. This 8km descent is easy on the knees and features some of the narrowest and most spectacular rock formations on the island, including the famous “Stone Arch.”
- Highlight: Navigating the “Stenada” section, where the gorge walls are just 1.60m. apart.
- The Reward: Ending the walk in the village of Komitades, where you can enjoy traditional Sfakian hospitality and a short drive to the nearby beaches.
