Katholiko Gorge & Monastery: A Spiritual Journey in Chania, Crete
Katholiko is known for its wonderful natural beauty, rich history and peaceful environment, as it is famous for the pastoral life that developed within the gorge over the centuries and for the spiritual life of the Monks that has left its mark throughout the region. Located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, the Katholiko Gorge hike offers a unique mix of spiritual heritage and Cretan wild nature. The trail starts from Gouverneto Monastery, follow the stone path towards the cave of the Bear and down to the abandoned Katholiko monastery ruins. we will walk through the Avlaki Gorge, an easy and short gorge which ends in an unexpected, small and beautiful fjord with turquoise waters. Swimming in these crystal clear waters and exploring this secluded corner of Chania is in itself a reason to dare this excursion.
The hike is not circular and after its end we will have to return via the same path back to the beginning to take the car and drive to the Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon for wine tasting.
The Monastery of Agia Triada was founded in the early 17th century during the Venetian occupation. Since then, it has continued to play an important role in the history and education of the wider region and Crete in general. Famous for its viticulture and fine wine varieties, its monks offer a unique combination of grape varieties, perfectly adapted to the microclimate of the area. At the Monastery of the Agia Triada, we will have the priceless opportunity to experience wine tasting in a historical and at the same time mystical space.

- The Gouverneto monastery or Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels of Gouverneto. Founded between 1537 and 1548 the monastery suffered damage during the Ottoman period, and was burned down during the revolution of 1821, but it continued to be inhabited.
- The ruins of the monastery of Saint John the Hermit, often called the oldest in Crete, create a mystical atmosphere for every hiker.
- The cave of Arkoudiotissa. A place of worship from antiquity to the present days, since inscriptions with the gods Apollo and Artemis have been found inside.

Availability: The tour is available all the time of the year. We need at least 2 people for this tour to go ahead. To keep it personal, we limit our groups to 8 people.
Duration: 5:30 hours in total. The duration of the hike is 2:5 – 3 hours. It’s important to check the activity levels here

Transportation: Transfer included, but only from the wider area of Chania and Rethymno city. If you need transfer from any other part of Crete, we can arrange it but with extra cost. Also, you can join us with your own transfer means.
