Psiloritis Mountain: Hiking the Roof of Crete

The massif of Psiloritis is the highest and most mythical mountain of Crete. His highest peak (2.456m) ”Timios Stavros” – it means Holy cross in Greek – offers a panoramic view all over the Island, given the fact that you are standing at the highest level of it. Because of its history, its geological and its environmental value, Psiloritis is part of Geoparks of UNESCO, which places the mountain amongst the Geoparks of high importance at global level! Don’t forget that the starting point of the Greek mythology is set at the mountain range of Ida mountain (Psiloritis).

Hiking Route to the Summit

The starting point of the most mythical hike in Crete is located on the North slopes of the mountain of Psiloritis. From here and through a well maintained trailed, we climb to it’s highest peak after of 3 hours demanding hiking. The stunning view of the peak is the the hiking landmark of the all the trails in the island. Also, Psiloritis mountain has another famous landmark high there. A small church, made of stone, it is raising at the top at the style of the Cretan “mitato” (traditional shepherds mountain-house/shelter). A typical example of interaction between the Cretans and the landscape.

The terrain is rocky with steep ascents and descents and loose stones at some parts, that’s why Proper hiking boot is required.

The duration of the hike is approximately 6 hours and it’s level is challenging. That’s why is important to check the activity levels here.
