Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival Chania
Your adventure begins in Chania, widely considered Crete’s most beautiful city. Depending your arrival time and after settling in, we will take a walking through the labyrinthine streets of the Old Town, admiring the Venetian port, the Egyptian Lighthouse, and the vibrant local markets.
In the evening, after the briefing about the upcoming program, we gather for a welcome dinner featuring authentic Cretan gastronomy to fuel up for the days ahead.

Day 2: Aradena Gorge
We head south to the wild Sfakia region to tackle the Aradena Gorge. Less crowded but breathtakingly dramatic, Aradena features towering 150-meter-high cliffs and a thrilling path that descends toward the shimmering Libyan Sea. The hike concludes at the picturesque Marmara beach, perfect for a rewarding swim in crystal-clear waters. After the refreshing swimming in the Libyan see, we return by boat to Sfakia and then to Rethymno.

Day 3: Ancient Eleftherna & Margarites
Heading into central Crete, today’s trail immerses us in history. We start from Margarites, a village renowned since Minoan times for its thriving ceramic and pottery tradition. Our hike takes us through lush, olive-clad hills to Ancient Eleftherna, a significant city of the Hellenistic and Roman eras. We complete the loop back to Margarites via a scenic route, walking through silver-green olive groves, vineyards, and past prickly pear cacti. Afterward, we’ll visit a pottery workshop and enjoy lunch together

Day 4: Preveli Beach Trail
Today we experience one of Crete’s most iconic landscapes. The Preveli Beach hiking trail is one of the most stunning coastal walks in Crete, offering a dramatic transition from rugged cliffs to a tropical palm oasis. This trail follows the banks of the river through the lower section of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge. We will walk through olive groves and along high ridges that offer views deep into the canyon, and finally at the palm beach where you can swim in the refreshing waters of the river or the salty Libyan sea.

Day 5: Zaros Gorge & Rouvas Forest
Leaving Agia Galini and the coast behind, we travel to the foothills of Mount Psiloritis. Starting from the artificial Lake of Zaros, we hike up the spectacular Agios Nikolaos Gorge. The ascent rewards us with the Rouvas Forest, a rare and ancient ecosystem of massive holm oaks. It is a peaceful, deeply shade region that showcases a completely different side of the Cretan landscape.
On our way to Heraklion, we will make a stop to visit the ancient site of Gortyn, a powerful city during Roman times.

Day 6: Knossos & Heraklion City
We trade our hiking boots for walking shoes to explore the cradle of European civilization. Afterward, we head into Heraklion for a city tour and a visit to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which houses the world’s finest collection of Minoan art and artifacts—including the original treasures found in the Kamares Cave.

Day 7: Kamares Cave
Prepare for a challenging and deeply rewarding alpine ascent. We head high into the slopes of Mount Psiloritis (Mount Ida), Crete’s highest mountain range. Our destination is the legendary Kamares Cave (approx. 1,520m altitude). This sacred site is where the exquisite, eggshell-thin Minoan “Kamares ware” pottery was discovered. The panoramic views over the Messara plain and the Libyan sea from the cave entrance are simply unforgettable.

Day 8: Departure

Alternative Crete’s services end at noon (12:00) and after making all the necessary arrangements for your transfer to the airport.
Essential info
Group size. The programme is run only with a minimum group size of 4 persons and the maximum group size is 17 persons. For bigger groups, please contact us.
Availability. The itinerary is available from April until October. The best time to undertaken it is in April to June and in September, October, so, you can avoid the high temperatures and the crowdedness of July & August.
Transportation. All group transfers, to and from the airport and between the hikes, are made by an air-conditioned 20-seater minibus. For any additional transportation beyond the program, private or group, there is an extra charge.
Accommodation. We stay at small two or three star hotels, where possible, with double (DBL) or twin (TWN) rooms on a BB basis (Bed & Breakfast). Please notice that the trip prices are based on double room occupancy and if you want to upgrade your accommodation, it is with extra charge.
Activity Levels. The difficulty of a multi-day trekking itinerary is defined from the hardest day of the trip, that’s why it is important to check the activity levels here.
Climate & Terrain. The terrain in Crete is rocky with loose stones at some parts. The coastal trails are dry with intense sun exposure and also must navigate sharp limestone “karst” landscapes and significant elevation changes. That’s why participants should be in good physical condition with a little experience.
Logistics. The local ferry network acts as a vital support system, allowing for luggage transfers between coastal points, which enables hikers to tackle the difficult terrain with only a day pack.
Insurance. Alternative Crete is covered by a professional third party liability insurance from Lloyd’s Insurance Company SA. It is recommended that each participant has taken out travel insurance before visiting Greece. If any traveller wishes to be covered for personal insurance, we offer additional travel insurance. The cost is not included in the total price of the trip and offered upon request and at an extra charge.
