Overview

Katholiko Gorge is located in the North coast of Chania and it is an easy and short gorge that ends in a beautiful rocky beach. This area is known for its stunning natural beauty, rich history, and serene environment, making it a popular destination for walkers and nature lovers.

Famous for his pastoral life developing inside the gorge over the ages, and the spiritual life of the Monks has left a mark all over the area. In the middle of the gorge there is the abandoned Monastery of Agios Ioannis, a place that takes us back in time to the previous years of the holy life of the place. That is the reason this excursion is unique, combined by an easy and pleasant hiking through a magnificent gorge, with a part of the history of Crete around monasticism, religion and myth.

The hike generally takes around three to four hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to admire the scenery. The path is well-defined but can be rocky and uneven in sections, so proper hiking shoes are advisable.

Hiking in Katholiko Gorge provides a unique opportunity to experience Crete’s natural beauty and history. Whether you’re a focused hiker or a casual walker, the gorge offers a rewarding outdoor adventure.
